I recently received an email from a concerned, fellow Internet business owner, asking for my opinion on an issue that could literally destroy his Internet business and the business of several other domains involved.
He had received legal notice from a prominent company, stating that he needed to relinquish his use and rights to his web site domain name because it contained three letters that infringed upon their trademark and their domain name. This same company also contacted several other Internet business owners and made similar demands.
The EU wishes to better protect Intellectual Property in the future. Consequently they have adopted a proposal for guidelines which should call a halt to the increasing numbers of copyright and trademark infringements. These measures aim at more consistency in laws within the EU member states as well as at a closer European-wide collaboration. By adopting theses guidelines the Commission want to put out a clear political signal in the struggle against product and trademark piracy.

BEIJING, April 7 (Xinhuanet) -- China has arrested 419 suspects for trademark infringement crimes in the past five months, an official with the Ministry of Public Security (MPS) said at a press conference on the State Office of Intellectual Property Protection here Thursday.
Since the beginning of a one-year campaign against trademark infringement launched by the MPS from last November, more than 340 cases involving 100 million yuan (12 million US dollars) have been found, said Gao Feng, an official with the MPS.
