FOLLOWING the June 30, 2005 announcement by the United States Department of Commerce (DOC) with intent to retain authority on Internet root servers, the global Internet community has been thrown into confusion once again.

Internet, defined as an interconnected system of networks that connects computers around the world via the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) or Internet Protocol (IP) in line with the Internet Technology Dictionary.com.

The Value of Intellectual Property

How do you value the intellectual property of your organisation, and perhaps more importantly, how do you ensure that once data/information that has a commercial value has been generated, it is properly protected from unauthorised publication?

Earlier in the week I was watching a flurry of e-mails with an attached copy of what was suggested to be Jamie Oliver’s latest book of cooking recipes as they crossed between private individuals and corporate e-mail mailboxes, which highlighted some of the problems involved in keeping information that has a real commercial value adequately contained.

1. Too late to start filing patent applications.

Unfortunately for many good technology companies, it may be too late to file for patent protection. The current Canadian rule provides applicants with a one-year grace period during which a patent application must be filed after certain public or private disclosure of the invention. Such disclosure may arise, for example, from a mere "offer for sale" of the technology, even if the product has not yet been built or prototyped.

Nat Torkington and I were discussing Microsoft's Shared Source Initiative not long ago. I left Microsoft in early December and had spent the last three years directly involved in various aspects of Shared Source work. The more we discussed his questions, the more we realized others probably shared the same questions. This article came from that realization.

Researchers in Canada who make it their job to find holes and glitches in digital security products are worried that proposed "anti-circumvention" amendments to federal copyright legislation will undermine their livelihood and lower the bar on digital protection.

Legal protection for so-called technological protection measures "is the equivalent of making screwdrivers illegal because they can be used to break and enter," argue executives of 12 software and security companies in a letter sent this week to Industry Minister David Emerson and Heritage Minister Liza Frulla.

"Good legislation targets the illegal act, not the legal tools the crook might use."

Younger people--"tweens" and teens--are more likely than adults to believe that technology will be vital to their future, but they are less likely to support the protection of intellectual property, according to a poll released Wednesday.

That is just one of the disconnects found in the poll conducted by the Harris Interactive market-research firm for the Business Software Alliance (BSA). The poll found that almost all tweens and teens (98 percent) believe that improvements in technology will be essential or important to their future, while the percentage dropped to 87 percent for adults.
