GSP Status Remains for Countries that Threaten American Intellectual Property Protections

WASHINGTON, Oct. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Defenders of Property Rights (DPR) announced today that it supports the Office of the United States Trade Representative's public review of the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP). Some countries benefit from GSP status despite ongoing threats to American innovation. The country of Brazil is currently threatening to break patents on several AIDS drugs if American companies do not meet their pricing demands.

"Brazil should not be allowed to engage in industrial blackmail by threatening US intellectual property rights only to be rewarded by our government with billions of dollars in preferred GSP trade status," said Nancie G. Marzulla, President of Defenders of Property Rights. "Rewarding this type of behavior sends a dangerous signal to the rest of the world that our property rights are negotiable. Defenders of Property Rights looks forward to submitting comment on the GSP trade program in hopes that the system can be improved to protect American innovators," Ms. Marzulla added.

Intellectual property related industries in the United States account for 15% of American GDP and 10% of the American workforce.
