SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 26, 2005--The Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) expressed hope that an international request for more information about China's intellectual property protection measures will strengthen the hands of officials in China who support better enforcement.

WASHINGTON, Oct. 25 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Randolph Hobson Guthrie III was arraigned in U.S. District Court in the Southern District of Mississippi on charges resulting from the first joint United States-China intellectual property criminal investigation, the Department of Justice, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Mississippi, and the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced today.

Guthrie, 38, a U.S. citizen, was arrested in Shanghai last July and was brought to the United States earlier this month. A bond hearing was held in U.S. District Court for the Central District of California after which Guthrie was released on a secured $1 million bond. His release was further conditioned upon surrendering his passport and submitting to home confinement with electronic monitoring. Guthrie was ordered to appear in federal court in Mississippi to face the charges in the criminal indictment.

Pool for patent royalties

Nearly 20 providers of RFID technology have announced plans to form an Intellectual Property (IP) licencing consortium. This will help to resolve the ongoing confusion over radio frequency identification patents and make it easier for vendors to licence patents, reduce risks for end-users and provide a convenient way for patent holders to manage their IP.

Fake Zippo vendor gets burned

HA NOI — A business owner selling counterfeit cigarette lighters and lighter fluid in violation of the US’ Zippo trademark was administratively fined by the Ministry of Science and Technology on Tuesday.

Inspectors and police found about 1,900 counterfeit lighters and 1,100 fluid cans pasted with the Zippo trademark at the Duy Hoang Shop in Nguyen Huu Huan Street in Ha Noi. Shop owner Phung Duy Hai will pay a fine of around VND5 million (US$320) and all merchandise bearing a false trademark will be confiscated and destroyed.

Unauthorized Access Leading Security Concern

FRAMINGHAM, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 17, 2005--Courion(R) Corporation, a leading provider of enterprise provisioning solutions, today announced key findings from a poll that asked customers to identify and rank their top information security concerns, challenges and issues. Seventy-eight percent of the customers polled listed their top security concern as unauthorized system access, followed closely by theft of intellectual property.

According to the Federal Trade Commission, 3.2 million citizens are victims of identity theft annually, costing businesses more than $50 billion to date. The fear of corporate data being stolen or accidentally leaked by insiders are top concerns for many companies. Almost all of the customers polled have been victims of a security incident, but most reported that external threats were more of a concern than internal threats from employees.
