NEW YORK, May 18 /PRNewswire/ --
In the US, one out of every five software programs installed on PC computers is a pirated copy. That's according to today's release of the Business Software Alliance's Annual Global Software Piracy Study.
While US software piracy rate may be the lowest in the world, the piracy rate is higher 90 percent in other parts of the world.
Robert Holleyman, President and CEO, Business Software Alliance:
Software piracy is a serious global problem. Last year, the U.S. economy lost $6.6 billion dollars due to software piracy. Illegal software use has a negative impact on economic activity and technological innovation. That translates to lost jobs, lost taxes and lost wages. BSA will continue its efforts to stem the growth of software piracy through education, research and enforcement.
IDC, a leading technology research company who conducted the BSA study, predicts piracy will continue to grow alongside increased Internet usage, given the growing popularity of illegal software on download sites and peer-to-peer systems.
