The team behind the MySQL Open Source database has launched an enterprise program designed to make it simpler and easier for enterprise IT staffs to adopt MySQL. The program, dubbed MySQL Network, provides both optimized MySQL technology, services and "fast track" answers to technical and licensing questions surrounding MySQL. MySQL Network reflects MySQL's sensitivity to the differences between early adopters and the needs of the new breed of enterprise user.
"In the past, people were spending time to save money. Now, we're focusing on people that can spend a little to save time," Director of MySQL Network Andy Bang told Open Enterprise Trends.
Bang gave the following example. "A lot of people who traditionally have downloaded MySQL are very technology-oriented, so they are willing to take the source code and compile it themselves and write their own storage engine. We are gearing MySQL Network to the corporate customers, who can't spend that extra time doing that. They just want to know which versions they can use, have it compiled and ready to run."
Inside MySQL Network Offerings:
Information, Service and Technology
To meet the greater demands of enterprise users, MySQL Network provides five important elements to enterprise IT:
(1) a knowledge base of articles, research and FAQs on most commonly asked questions;
(2) automated updates and alerts;
(3) a specially-certified, production-ready edition of MySQL software;
(4) a range of online and telephone support services; and
(5) all related technology warranties and license/use indemnifications.
Searchable Knowledge Base -- Bang said he expects demand to be high for all features, especially the knowledge base. "We're asked many types of questions -- ranging from technical, licensing, and support issues. MySQL Network is a quick and easy way to get these questions answered." Andy said. Among some of the FAQs
MySQL Network addresses are:
**Which version of MySQL should I use?
**Because you update very few months, how and when do I update MySQL?
**How do I reduce my intellectual property risk? and
**How can I get knowledgeable tech support, and from who?
Bag further said MySQL Network's capability to send enterprise-centric alerts will be key to providing a proper level of on-going contact. "IT execs and DBAs may not want emails or updates on all the activities of the MySQL community, but we found they do want to receive data, alerts and updates that would most affect their MySQL business applications -- and their access/security policies," Bang said. Among the alerts features:
Automated Updates and Alerts -- MySQL Network provides two types of automated alerts:
1. Update Advisor alerts customers of new and relevant MySQL certified software for their environment, and can assist developers and DBAs with MySQL install and upgrade process.
2. Technical Advisor notifies customers about issues related to their specific computing environment - before they may adversely affect their applications. Completely customizable, these bulletins cover such issues as operating system security vulnerabilities, new features, performance enhancements and important Knowledge Base articles.
Alerts are available via email, pager, or SMS message, and the complete list of updates and alerts can also be viewed using a standard Web browser.
The Certified Edition of MySQL -- MySQL Network's edition of MySQL is tested against test suites for regression, benchmark, and boundary conditions; tested for known security vulnerabilities; and is distributed using native package managers for more than 10 native platforms. Among the key enterprise-caliber features in MySQL Network's edition of MySQL are:
Multiple storage engines including full transaction support with commit, rollback, crash recovery and low-level locking capabilities. You can select from a range of storage engines from fast in-memory operation to full transaction support and clustering for high-availability;
Query caching delivers significant performance benefits and with database replication, many slave servers can run off a single master server increasing both speed and robustness.
A robust security system with advanced permissions and support for SSL transport-layer encryption provides robust application security.
Full text indexing and searching enables rapid searching of text fields for words and phrases. This includes relevance rankings, exact phrase matching and Boolean search operators.
MySQL Network Subscription MySQL Network is available as an annual subscription in four different tiers, ranging from $495 to $4995 per database server. Pricing depends (Basic, Gold, Silver, Platinum), tailored to organizations' differing sizes and needs. [For instance, Platinum subscribers receive unlimited 24x7 telephone and Web access to MySQL's experienced support engineering team, including guaranteed emergency response times of less than 30 minutes for the most severe issues.]
MySQL's community edition continues to be freely available on MySQL's public website.
