ATLANTA --(Business Wire)-- Jan. 6, 2005 -- Will Advise Federal Government on Security of Critical Information and Economic Infrastructure
Internap Network Services Corporation (AMEX: IIP), the leading provider of performance-based routing services over the Internet, announced today that President George W. Bush has appointed Internap President and Chief Executive Officer, Gregory A. Peters, to serve on the National Infrastructure Advisory Council (NIAC).
The President established the NIAC in order to support a coordinated effort by both government and private sector entities to advise him on security of information systems supporting the nation's critical infrastructure. As a NIAC member, Peters will join a select group of leaders appointed to provide the President advice on these issues from a variety of sectors of the economy, including banking and finance, transportation, energy, manufacturing, and emergency government services.
"Mr. Peters represents the next generation of network service leaders," said U.S. Senator Saxby Chambliss (R-Ga.). "He is a hands-on executive with a broad base of knowledge and telecommunications experience, which I believe will prove valuable to the work of this important committee as they seek to provide President Bush with advice and ideas to protect our nation's infrastructure."
"It is a privilege to have been selected to serve on the President's National Infrastructure Advisory Council," said Peters, in accepting the position. "Advances in information technology have changed the way our economy and government is run and, at the same time, created new security challenges. I look forward to working with corporate and government leaders on these important and timely issues."
Peters joins the CEOs of TXU, Cisco, Symantec, Internet Security Systems, Akamai Technologies, DuPont, Intel Corp., Pfizer Inc., Union Pacific Corp., Wells Fargo and others from the private sector, academia, and state and local government. The Council also works closely with the President's National Security and Telecommunications Advisory Committee (NSTAC).
According to its charter, the NIAC draws members' expertise to provide advice and make recommendations on the following:
a. Enhancing cooperation between the public and private sectors in protecting information systems supporting critical infrastructures in key economic sectors and providing reports on the issue to the President;
b. Proposing and developing ways to encourage private industry to perform periodic risk assessments of critical information and telecommunications systems;
c. Monitoring the development of private sector Information Sharing and Analysis Centers (ISACs) and providing recommendations to the President on how these organizations can best foster improved cooperation among ISACs, the Department of Homeland Security, and other Federal Government entities.
d. Advising the Federal Government lead agencies that have critical infrastructure responsibilities, industry sector coordinators and the Department of Homeland Security.
