The FBI asked Honolulu business leaders Wednesday for their help in fighting the growing menace of computer crimes in the workplace.
Charles Goodwin, the special agent in charge of the Honolulu division, used a Chamber of Commerce breakfast at Dave and Buster's Restaurant near downtown Honolulu, to try to spread the word about what he called "the threat of cyber attacks."
The attacks have been linked to financial fraud and stolen intellectual property at companies in Hawaii and across the U.S. mainland, Goodwin said.
The most likely sources are independent computer hackers and disgruntled employees, Goodwin said.
But corporations don't report the incidents half the time, Goodwin said. They worry about negative publicity about their computer systems being hacked, Goodwin said.
"They think competitors will play up the lack of security," Goodwin said.
"But if they don't report it we won't know. There needs to be more of an alliance between businesses and government on this issue. Computer crimes are a threat and it's growing."
