Singapore has set aside more than S$3m worth of scholarships to develop nanotechnology, the study of structures many thousand times smaller than a strand of hair.

At the launch of NUS Nanoscience and Nanotechnology Initiative, Acting Education Minister, Tharman Shanmugaratnam, said Singapore has filed six patents under the NUS Nano programme.

He added that research into the little-known nanotechnolgy picked up over the past two years.

Singapore is using the know-how in the pharmaceuticals, chemicals, electronics and opto-electronics industries.

Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam said: "Singapore aspires to be at the forefront of nanoscience. We have some competitive advantages. Despite being a resource-scarce nation of just 4 million, we are a centre for high-value manufacturing and research. We also rank highly in intellectual property protection, transparency, and economic and physical security."
