Networks, from wireless to wired

Alcatel (www.alcatel.com) has added wireless local area network (WLAN) products to its range of LAN and Internet Protocol (IP) switches in Malaysia.

This allowed the company to deliver the industry’s most comprehensive, standards-based wired and wireless converged mobility solutions, it claimed.

Alcatel business development manager (enterprise solutions division, South-East Asia), Kenny Ng, said the new WLAN offerings were armed with features to protect users from the security threats faced by mobile users.

“The most important feature of the WLAN solution is the ability to trace a rogue AP (access point) and to deal with the threat.

"The Alcatel wireless IDS (intrusion detection system) solution is the first of its kind in the market with a capability to trace and counter the threats facing users at popular hotspots," Ng said in Petaling Jaya recently.

The new Alcatel products include OmniAccess 1200 Access Points and OmniAccess 4000 wireless LAN switches and appliances.

The OmniAccess Wireless LAN product family provides the industry’s most up-to-date platform for voice-over-WLAN and other real-time applications and services.

It ships immediately with leading-edge security standards and is 802.11i-ready for next-generation wireless security support, Alcatel claimed.

The company would also be introducing Mobile IP Touch 300 and 600 wireless phones by the middle of this year.

The IP phones were designed to meet the communication needs of enterprises of any size and across a range of vertical markets.

“The mobile IP phones act as extensions of the Alcatel OmniPCX family of IP-PBXs (private branch exchanges) to provide access to enterprise-class communication features and services,” said Ng.

They utilise the 802.11b standard to operate as client devices on wireless LANs, allowing converged mobile voice and data applications on a single wireless infrastructure.
